Natural gas plants in Ohio owned by big tech eligible for millions in new sales tax breaks

Tax officials say new natural gas plants, built for private use of data centers owned by major technology companies, can exploit a huge sales tax break created years ago. This comes in addition to separate state and local tax breaks for the data centers themselves.

New natural gas-fired power plants in Ohio, built solely to fuel data centers owned by the likes of Google and Amazon, are eligible to take advantage of a huge state sales tax break, state officials said Tuesday, hitting several lawmakers and lobbyists by surprise.

This means Ohio could lose out on millions of dollars of tax revenue from two booming industries – big data and natural gas – at a time when state lawmakers are already slashing revenues through income tax cuts. Click Here to Keep Reading…
